How to care for Lacquer
A lacquer finish makes furniture look glossy and beautiful, with endless color possibilities including white, black, red, blue, green, and more.
Although lacquer is a durable finish, it is delicate and needs to be handled with care as it is vulnerable to chips, scratches, exposure to heat, and wear. The following are a few general tips to maintain lacquerware and upkeep its smooth and glossy surface.
General care tips
- Keep lacquerware out of direct sunlight
- Do not scratch the surface with sharp objects, such as knives and forks
- Do not place lacquerware in a microwave or oven
- Keep your lacquerware dry: always wipe water spills immediately
- Observe regular dusting which prevents dust from accumulating and damaging the surface glossiness
- Do not use paper towels to clean as they could be too abrasive.
Cleaning tips
- Do not soak in water
- Clean your lacquerware with a damp soft cloth (if needed dampen it with soapy water) and dry immediately
- Avoid using harsh cleaning chemicals, such as ammonia or bleach
- Do not wash lacquerware in the dishwasher
- A regular monthly polish with car wax will maintain the lacquer glossy finish
- Use down strokes when wiping the furniture rather than circular movements
